Leah Vincent...
COUPLES+ THERAPIST / PSYCHOLOGIST
Hi, my name is Leah and my pronouns are she/her. I’m a counselling psychologist who has been practicing for 20 years. I have a Master’s in Counselling Psychology and have completed additional training in relationship therapy and family therapy. I’m a member of the Australian Psychological Society.
I believe that connection and meaning are at the heart of both relationships and therapeutic work. My style examines the complexities within individuals, their relationships, and the stories we tell ourselves and each other. I believe strongly in social justice and have worked with a wide cross-section of people and relationships. I’ve had significant experience working with trauma including family violence and sexual assault.
My approach is underpinned by narrative therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and cognitive behavioural therapy. I adjust my mode of therapy according to the needs of my clients to ensure our work makes sense and resonates. Therapy sessions are person-centred and provide a supportive environment that acknowledges individuals' inner logic and emotional responses, whilst also challenging unhelpful ways of thinking. I focus on the process occurring between a couple alongside the issues themselves.
I like to work in a collaborative way and regularly check in with my clients to ensure that the work we are doing is useful, and we can modify if needed.
I like to draw from therapies including:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
The Gottman Method
Narrative Therapy
Existential Therapy
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
My master’s thesis focussed on couples’ perceptions and coping strategies for relationship stress, and my graduate diploma thesis centred around sex and gender when coping with relationship stress.
I currently work in a forensic setting aside from Luma Room, and most of my previous experience has been in the not-for-profit sector and community health. I previously worked at Star Health as program manager for a range of teams including counselling, family violence, sex worker programs, child/youth/family, and health promotion. I have also worked at Melbourne Counselling Service (The Salvation Army), with the Police, Lifeworks (now Relationship Matters), CASA (Centre Against Sexual Assault), Women’s Health West (now GenWest), Relationships Australia, Monash University, and Caraniche.
My work has consisted of individual and couples therapy, group facilitation, management, and supervision. In addition, I have delivered lectures and tutorials to multiple TAFEs and Universities. I offer in person or online appointments on Wednesday evenings, and work with both individuals and couples(+). I also offer clinical supervision to other professionals.
