FAQs

What is Luma Room?

Luma Room is an inclusive relationship therapy practise founded by clinical psychologist Dr Melanie Schuijers. We are located in Brunswick, just off Sydney Road, and offer in person or online relationship therapy, as well as couples+ retreats for reconnection, and therapist facilitated date nights. Therapists at Luma Room are qualified, experienced, and dedicated to couples+ therapy. We value a non-judgmental, evidence-based approach that is tailored to each unique relationship so that sessions are meaningful and aligned with your goals.

Are you inclusive of LGBTQIA+ communities? Do you offer therapy for diverse relationship structures? Are you neuroaffirming? Will you consider my cultural context?

Yes. All Luma Room clinicians are strong allies or part of LGBTQIA+ communities themselves. We are committed to providing a non-judgemental and inclusive environment for all people and relationships. We have experience offering therapy for those in diverse relationship structures, are kink friendly, and tailor therapy to you. We strive to be a neuroaffirming practice, have fidgets available in each room, and can adjust and dim lighting as needed. We also welcome all cultural contexts and have clinicians who can offer sessions in other languages if you prefer, such a Spanish and Mandarin. It is important to all of us at Luma Room to provide a safe and respectful space for you to navigate and nurture your connections. We also always welcome feedback and ideas about how we can make our space safer and more comfortable for you.

I work weekdays. Do you offer after hours couples+ therapy or sessions on weekends?

Yes. We offer sessions during business hours, as well as after hours. We have evening and weekend session available across multiple clinicians, with the hope that you can find both a good therapeutic match and a time that works for you. We also offer Telehealth appointments if it’s hard to make it in person, for example if you’re in a long distance relationship, are located far from Brunswick, or prefer the convenience of online relationship therapy when co-ordinating busy schedules. We have a flat rate of $270.00 per 50 minute session or $295 after hours (any session beginning at 5pm or later as well as weekends). We additionally offer flexibility in session length, as some couples+ prefer more time to explore their connection each session. Feel free to reach out if you’d like to discuss what might work specifically for you.

What is your cancellation policy?

We have a 48 hour cancellation policy. There is no fee for appointments cancelled or rescheduled more than 48 hours in advance. In the event of a cancellation within 48 hours, or if you don’t attend, the full appointment fee is charged. Our therapists only take on a certain amount of clients at once so that they can offer consistent and high quality care, and once a session is booked, it is set aside just for you, so we appreciate your understanding on this policy. If you feel ready to attend therapy less often, or finish up, you can let your therapist know.

What happens if I am running late?

These things happen! If you are running late, you are of course still welcome to attend the remainder of your appointment as the time is set aside for you. Pease be aware that your therapist is usually unable to run overtime due to other appointments. You can let us know you are running late by emailing hello@lumaroom.com.au or your therapist directly.

Where is Luma Room? How do I get there?

Our couples+ therapy practice is in the Inner North of Melbourne / Naarm. We are located just off Sydney Road, inside the Nightingale Wurru Wurru Biik building at 108/215-219 Albion Street, Brunswick. To find us, head down the shared bike path. You can enter through the amphitheatre on the right (next to Osoi Cafe). We are located on Level 1, so head up the steps and turn right down the corridor where you will find us. We offer accessable couples+ therapy. If you have access requirements, please let us know. You can buzz 108 on the keypad just before the ampitheatre and take the lift up to Level 1. This is also how you enter for evening appointments.

Do you offer individual therapy?

Currently we are not set up to support individual therapy. However, some individual sessions are possible within the context of relationship therapy, with the relationship still considered the 'client'. Your therapist will be able to advise you on whether this might be helpful. If you're looking for individual therapy alongside your relationship therapy, you will need to match with a separate clinician to your relationship therapist. Some places to look include: Psychology Today, APS Find a Psychologist, or AAPi Find A Psychologist. Your GP may also have a recommendation.

Can I book multiple sessions at once?

Yes. You are more than welcome to book multiple sessions at once to secure your preferred appointment time. In fact, we do recommend this as appointment slots tend to fill up quickly. Even if you book ahead, you can still collaborate with your therapist on the course of therapy and change your appointments flexibly, taking into account the 48 hour cancellation policy.

Do you offer virtual appointments?

Yes. We offer both face-to-face (in-person) and Telehealth (online) appointments. This means you can attend appointments by visiting our clinic in Brunswick or from the comfort of your own space, depending on what works for you and suits your needs. You can also do a mix of both, and can change an appointment to Telehealth last minute if you need to. We suggest having a private space with a good interenet connection for online appointments.

Can I claim Medicare rebate?

Unfortunately couples+ therapy does not qualify for Medicare rebates as Mental Health Care Plans are only available to individuals. If you have private health insurance, you may be eligible for rebates depending on your plan and the clinician you choose.

What if I have had a first session, or a few sessions, and I don’t feel it is a match?

That’s okay! While we are all dedicated to evidence-based care, different therapists offer different styles and modalities, so you may resonate with one over another. If you feel it’s not a match, you could discuss this with your clinician and see if the approach can be adapted or tailored so it feels more aligned (we value open communication and your feedback). You can also reach out to hello@lumaroom.com.au and see if there is another therapist who may be more suited to you and your relationship goals.

What qualifications do your relationship therapists have?

All therapists at Luma Room hold qualifications in their fields, are registered, and have experience and additional training in couples+ therapy specifically. We all have different backgounds, spanning clinical psychology, counselling psychology, general psychology, counselling, sexology, and social work. You can read through the profiles of each of our clinicians to learn more about them, their training, and their areas of interest.

I’m nervous about reaching out. What can I expect?

It’s completely normal to feel nervous about reaching out. This can sometimes be the hardest part of the journey. Please know that we are here to answer any of your questions so that you might feel a little more comfortable. When you reach out, you’re welcome to share a little about what you’re going through and we can support you in matching with a clinician, or you can read through the profiles on our website and, if you resonate with someone in particular, you may like to enquire about them specifically. After that, our admin team will help you find an initial appointment time. You will recieve some logistical information and an intake from to fill out with your details, a consent form, and a few questions about what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. Your first appointment is about you and your therapist getting to know each other, and perhaps setting some goals, then make a plan for moving forward.

Is relationship therapy for me?

There’s no one way to do therapy, and clients come to us from all walks of life with many different therapy goals. Some feel stuck in the same cycles, want to work through a trust break, improve communication, navigate change together, make significant decisions together, grow their connection and intimacy, rekindle sparks, increase understanding, have tough conversations, navigate stress and hardship, explore non-monogomy, have guidance in opening a relationship for the first time, navigate parenting and household dynamics, better understand and work towards healing of attachment wounds, or simply protect regular time for closeness, facilitated by therapist. There are some particular instances where therapy is not recommended, however, and can potentially make things worse, for example if there is active domestic violence. In this case, please consider reaching out to Orange Door. If you have any more questions around whether therapy may be for you, feel free to contact us.

What are couples+ therapy retreats and date nights?

Many clients use therapy sessions to navigate challenges, however, protecting time for playfulness, closeness, and connection may also be a goal. So, we wanted to create opportunities outside of sessions dedicated specificaly to this. Retreats and date nights are designed by a clinical psychologist to support you in nurturing your relationship and fostering warmth and depth. Retreats are located just out of Naarm / Melbourne, are all inclusive, and offer a program of group activities, drawing upon things such as somatic therapy, movement, art therapy, and eco-therapy at a nature-based location. Date nights are held locally and each one offers a therapist-guided activity for couples+ to enjoy together, alongside the Luma Room community. Please sign up to our newsletter or reach out if you’d like to learn more.
